On the 8th April 2009 a man was arrested over the death of Colette Aram, a teenager murdered 26
years ago and whose case was the first ever featured on BBC One's Crimewatch programme.
Colette Aram, 16, was walking to her boyfriend Russell Godfrey’s house in Keyworth,
Nottinghamshire, on 30 October 1983 when she was abducted. Her body was later found in a field close
to her home.
Colette lived with her parents, hairdresser Jacquiline, 53, and 58-year-old joiner Tony, along with
her brother Mark, who was 19 at the time, in Normanton Lane, Keyworth.
Colette’s Mum Jacqui said she was a fun child. She was very happy, always laughing, always
smiling. She always thought about other people. She was a very caring girl. She did a stint in one
of the hospitals as nursing was what she originally wanted to do," says Jacqui. "She had started
working as a trainee hairdresser. Her aunt bought the salon for Colette so she had some kind of
future. But of course that never happened."
Hundreds of officers worked on the case after the teenager's body was found just over a mile from
where she disappeared. During the case, detectives developed a DNA profile of the killer after items
recovered during the inquiry were re-examined. Following the DNA breakthrough, police have used it
to eliminate about 800 suspects.
Nottinghamshire Police began a publicity campaign - with leaflets delivered to 15,000 homes - last
October, on the 25th anniversary of her murder.
This also saw a new Crimewatch appeal, which officers said brought a number of lines of enquiry
forward.
